UBCSCC Slush Series #5 - EXHIBITION ONLY!

The 5th installment of our 7 part Slush Series has been declared a fun day with no timing or scoring taking place due to extreme weather conditions. We have added an 8th Slush Series date (the series will still be a best 5 of 7 series) and the date can be found on our calendar below. Despite the snowy conditions, a great time was had by all as we dared mother nature to do her worst to dampen our spirits. In the afternoon, the course dried up significantly and looked more like a traditional autocross course with people able to finally find some semblance of traction. We all had lots of fun and are looking forward to next year's traditional "snowed out" event!

Slush Series 3 Recap

Slush 3, last AutoX event of 2007. Temperature = 9C max. 101 drivers, 7+2 runs! Plus 37 items of food and donations!

Thanks again for donating to The Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society, who provides food and related assistance to those in need. UBCSCC matched the donations from its generous members and bumped the total amount raised to $500.

The introduction of running the same class grouping in the same heat when logistically possible created more of an even playing field for the sets of classes grouped together. With the amount of overlap available on this 30s course originally concepted by Edwen Ma, along with quick changeovers, it allowed us to put in 7 official runs and 2 fun runs.

Arthur Chan took FTD in Pinky 240SX after heat one had their chance to get rid of the frost and morning dew on course. When group 2 took their turn, Mitch in his STi (on Hoosier wets!) grapped FTD from Art. They traded places once more in the afternoon until Mitch's final run when he said "Oh no you did int!" and cleaned things up to take back FTD once and for all. But let's not discount Philip Li though, he was silent but deadly in his C-Mod Miata and just missed Mitch's FTD by 0.2s with his final run in the last heat in the afternoon.

Top PAX for this event belonged to Arthur Chan (his post-race course analysis explains it), with Mitch coming in a very close second. Top Novices (PAX) for this event were Ryan Kingan, Jackson Lam, and Victor Chan, all belonging to the STU class, and all driving Subarus!

Last, but not least, please welcome new pimps to UBCSCC's exclusive STP (Street Touring Pimps) class - Jack Mah in the Team1 2.5RS, and Jason Louie in Ecurie Snoopy's Mazda 3! Like our JDMJon says: "STP - The class for cars not built to the hilt, and where the drivers are laid back and pimpin'!"

With 6 weeks until Slush 4 on January 6th in '08, this gives us all plenty of time to reflect on how we did this year, and also makes some of us think of ways to get our racing fix during this downtime. Well, UBCSCC will be organizing a go-karting session at TBC Indoor Kart Racing in Richmond - To find out more, check out our Social Event thread to learn more and signup!

The 2007-08 Slush Series kicked off with lots of new members and friends, well attended events, and many memorable moments. We'd like to wish everyone good luck on any exams our students may have, Happy Holidays, and see you all in the new year!

UBCSCC Slush Series #2: "Windchill Factor"

On Rememberance Day, Slush Series 2 saw 91 drivers come out to play on our 50s course, designed by Mark Uhlmann. Key areas that made up and lost time were "The Tail" and "Dizzy." With limited daylight, we were able to get 5 runs in the wet but not-so-wet surface.. there were definitely no huge puddles (or ponds) this time!

Racing was paused at 11 o'clock as we observed a moment of silence to remember those men and women who served and continue to serve out country. Without the efforts of those brave individuals we could not enjoy the events we have come to love.

Mitch Burton in his AWD STi machine (with the right tires this time) took home FTD, while Top Pax was claimed by Ken Au- Yeung of STS, who was followed super close by the STX-Man Jason Johnson in his GTi. Novices performed very well as usual (also with the help of Subaru's AWD :) with Ryan Kingan in his STi coming in as Top Novice, while Andre Marziali once again captured another novice podium finish in 2nd place. Rounding out the 3 top novices is newcomer Ashkan Rafipour in his Mazda 3.

With two of the seven Slush events completed, the top overall and top novice standings are starting to take shape. Hint to Novices: If you want to improve your times, make sure you get plenty of course walks, and don't be afraid to grab a senior driver to ride with you!

The next event is Slush 3 "Windchill Factor," taking place on November 25th. Its the last AutoX for the 2007 year, so come on out and get your racing fix before winter truly sets in!

See you at Slush 3 on November 25th!

UBCSCC Slush Series #1: "Slush Opener"

On Sunday October 28th, UBCSCC kicked off the winter AutoX season with our "Slush Opener" event. In total, 98 drivers showed up and fought it out in the rain! While 47 of those were novices and some were brand new to the sport of AutoX, the weather did not stop them from exploring the limits of their cars and enjoying the course, designed by our exec-at-large Allan Johanson.

At the end of the day, kudos goes out to Mark Uhlmann for stealing FTD from Ken Au-Yeung by a narrow margin, who ended up capturing Top Indexed Time. On the novice side of things, the 3 Top Novices finishes were: Bernard Lai, Alvin Man, and Andre Marziali, who will all receive a free entry, $10 off, and $5 off for Slush Series 2, respectively. They actually finished within 3 tenths of each other! Good job guys!

What will the weather be like for Slush Series 2: "The Cold Front?" Who will capture FTD and Top Indexed? And which novice(s) will repeat their podium finishes, or will a new set of novices emerge to claim the those spots?

Join us at Slush Series #2 on November 11th to find out!!

UBCSCC Course: AutoX 101: Saturday, Sep 22nd

Saturday, September 22nd marked the date of UBCSCC's sold out AutoX 101 Course. Though the morning sessions periodially drizzled rain, nothing could dampen our students' collective enthusiasm as they eagerly worked through the variety of exercises and obstacles laid out by the UBCSCC Instructor team. At the end of the day we reassembled our original course from the morning to measure our students' improvement - every student who took the school improved upon their times. Average gains were in the neighborhood of 2-3 seconds, some people seeing as much as a 6 second improvment!

Some feedback from our school...

"That was an awesome experience. Ill definitely do it again."

"Awesome event! Way better than what I was expecting. Well worth the money, very well organized, and genius instructors. I'll be there for the next one for sure!"

"Great school, I learned a bunch and had a blast. Thank you to all the instructors and the volunteers who helped out. Can't wait until the 201 school in the spring."

Stay tuned for AutoX 201 in the spring!

50th Anniversary/Team Enduro: Sunday, Aug 26th

To celebrate UBCSCC's 50th year, we are hosting a special race day complete with food and prizes, coupled with our 2nd annual Team Enduro! (Cross your fingers for the new larger pad to be finished!!)

Your entry fee of $30 (through Karelo, $35 on-site) gets you a day of racing, food, as well as your chance at some door prizes!

Last year's winner was Team Anti-Pax, followed by Team Stock and Team1!!111!!!11!. Who will top this year's list? Get your team together now for a day of grueling competition at the UBCSCC 50th Annivesary/Team Enduro event!

Don't worry if you don't have a team organized for the event. Come out anyway and we will make sure that you get onto a team!

Race details:
* Teams will consist of 4 drivers in any combination of cars and classes, provided no more than two drivers per car per class.
* There will be 2 parts to the day: Morning practice runs and afternoon competition runs.
* For practice runs, each competitor will get 1 or more single lap practice runs on the course, much like at a regular autocross. The number of practice runs will depend on the event turnout.
* For competition runs, each competitor on the team will get to drive the track 1 time. Each driver's "attempt" at the course will consists of 3 laps of the course, much like a< Solo 1 session. This means the course will be longer than a typical autocross, so there will be more seat time per attempt.
* Each driver's attempt at the course will result in a single time for that competitor. Team member's times will be PAXed and then added together for the team's official aggregate time for this event.
* There will be a perpetual trophy awarded to the top team.

NTN #3: Sun + Asphalt = Fun!

It was a great day for racing, as it was a great day for Canada Day! The weather could not have been better as we received continuous sunshine throughout the day for our 70+ drivers to show off what them and their cars can do on the dry asphalt that Pitt Meadows Airport had to offer!

48 Novices showed up to compete in our Vancouver's Next Top Novice series, with many of them first timers. With the help from some skillful senior drivers, they were able to navigate and tackle the novice-friendly course, which was setup in the morning with the help of some generous volunteers who showed up early to lay down the cones. 6 x 50-60 second runs were had by all who stayed from beginning to end.

The Top Novices for this event included Gordon Lau, Wojtek Siedlaczek, and Ken Lau, among others.

The following is a quick recap of all the class winners:

AS: Mitch Burton (also Top PAX)
BS: Edward Tsui
DS: Bill Rhodes
ES: Ken Lau
FS: Tony Huynh
GS: Ray Steep
HS: Ricky Ho

ASP: Ming Yip

STS: Ken Au-Yeung
STX: Jason Johnson
ST2: Carson Au
STU: Tim Ames

SM: Sead Causevic
SM2: Hedwig Poon (also FTD)

NTN #2/Goodbye Boundary Bay Airport

70 drivers, some spectators, and lots of hungry people showed up at UBCSCC's Vancouver's Next Top Novice #2 event to race the 60s course, to eat some good food at the on-site BBQ, and to bid farewell to Boundary Bay Airport, a venue that played host to many racing events for the AutoX community for 30 years!

The event included Jared Powell-Williams in his 92 SM Miata taking the last and final FTD at the site, while Henry Ho co-drove a 98 D-Stock Integra Type-R to take Top Pax. Last, but not least, Gordon Lau in his STS RSX-S came in as the Top Novice of this event!

UBCSCC would like to thank the members who came out to race with us one last time at this venue. Boundary Bay Airport will be forever missed as we move on to other places in the Lower Mainland to race, to socialize, and most of all - to have some fast, friendly, fun racing!

Slush Series #6: "The Meltdown"

Another cold and wet day still brought some heated competition at Slush Series #6, appropriately named "The Meltdown." Once again, STS was the most highly contested class at the event, continuing where they left off from the last event. "Babyface" Kelvin Luk, co-driving "JDM" (but soon to be krautwagening) Jon's Integra, set the bar early in the morning heat. The afternoon saw Don Nimi in PDM's STS 240SX "Pinky" and Ken Au-Yeung's Impreza 2.5RS trading fastest times with Ken edging out the win by 0.5 seconds, scoring FTD in the process. Not only did they score 1-2 in the class, but also on Indexed and Raw Times as well!

A-Stock also provided an entertaining battle where veterans Mitch Burton in his Impreza STI got the best of Edwen Ma in his S2000. But that wasn't the best performance that Mitch's Impreza could muster as Paul Van Tassel, co-driving with Mitch but competing in SM, managed to find 0.48s that its owner couldn't, and set the top time for SM.

The morning's only sub 57 second run was set by Jack Yeung in his CSP Miata but didn't stick around to compete in the afternoon heat. With times falling as they did, who knows what the FTD would've looked like.

You can read more about this event in our forum, complete with results links and feedback from attendees.

*To all the student racers: Like the Slush 6 course map said, "Keep it straight.. don't be ridin' dirty." Good luck on your midterms!

Slush Series #5: "Winter Fresh"

While course setup on Saturday was warm and sunny, light rain and slight wind was constantly felt throughout Sunday. The most intence action centered around STS, where 8 of the Top 10 PAX drivers belonged. Leading the charge was Bryan Hoffman in Carson Au's 240SX with a 35.594. Spencer Devivo's co-driving of Gordon Lau's RSX-S gained him second, while Don Nimi in Courtenay Whynot's 240SX "Pinky" followed very closely behind in third. No one knows why there were so many top co-drivers this Sunday, but one thing we do know for sure is that this is only the tip of the iceberg for what STS will be like in 2007!

FTD for Slush 5 belonged to Dave Christmas in his SM Celica, turning in a 42.549 - that's 2.1s quicker than the closest competitor! He also finished 4th in PAX, in front of 5th place Denny Fok and his STX IS300 who completes the Top 10 PAX.

A big thank you goes to the competitors who helped run the event and stuck around to clean up as we once again managed to squeeze in 8 runs! Your efforts helped made it possible for everyone to leave the site in a timely manner.

You can read more about this event and our upcoming Slushes on our forum. See you at Slush 6 on February 4th!

Happy New Year at Slush Series #4!

With Vancouver receiving continuous rainfall since late Saturday afternoon, only 49 drivers decided to head down to Boundary Bay on Sunday morning to race.. mostly in the dry! Little did everyone know, it would turn out to be a beautiful day with zero rainfall! Not only did they get to blast through JDM Jon's 50s course on the quick-drying runway, they also got a total of 8 runs plus some fun runs at the end when the sun came out. A difference of almost 3s was seen on the fastest runs between the morning and the afternoon sessions.

Congratulations to John Yeung, who grabbed both FTD and Top PAX for this event with his CSP Miata!

Our thanks goes out to those who came down to celebrate the new year of AutoX with us! We wish everyone all the best in 2007! See you at Slush #5!

Slush Event #8 Added to Slush Schedule

Due to concerns with courseworker safety and other factors during the snowstorm at Slush #3, we ended up running it as an exhibition event where the runs were not timed and offered our paid members an unlimited number of runs.

After much debate, the UBCSCC Exec Team has decided to secure Boundary Bay Airport for Sunday, March 4th to hold an additional event in order to continue the Slush tradition as a best 5 out of 7 series.

The UBCSCC Exec Team would like to wish everyone a Safe and Happy New Year! See you at "Our 4th Slush" on Jan 7th!
